Vintage Emery, Bird, Thayer Letterpress Print Block – Kansas City Department Store History
This vintage letterpress print block features the name Emery, Bird, Thayer—a prominent department store that played a significant role in Kansas City's retail history.
Emery, Bird, Thayer & Company (commonly known as EBT) began in the 1860s, initially outfitting traders and pioneers. Over time, it evolved into an upscale department store, becoming a central shopping destination in downtown Kansas City. In the 1890s, the company constructed a new building occupying a full block along East 11th Street from Walnut to Grand, designed by the architectural firm of Van Brunt & Howe. This building became a prime attraction on the city's main retail thoroughfare, popularly known as "Petticoat Lane," and was famed for its Tea Room.
This particular block, measuring approximately 3 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 3/4", was likely used for printing labels, advertisements, or packaging materials. Crafted from wood with a metal face, it showcases the company's name in a classic typeface, reflecting the branding style of the era.
Condition: Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use.
A unique artifact for collectors of printing history, vintage branding, or those interested in Kansas City's rich commercial past.
